About the Event

Raised in the Middle East, Katherine Bassil's aspirations went from wanting to be a doctor, to a psychologist and finally deciding to pursue the career path in neuroscience, where she moved to Europe to undergo an education in neuroscience. It is not until she was midway into her neuroscience Masters program that Katherine developed a passion for neuroethics, science policy and everything that was considered non-confirmative to a traditional academic career path. She is now a second year neuroscience PhD candidate at Maastricht University, where she describes her experience as unique due to a skill she believes she has developed across the years. Katherine believes this skill has led her to initiate collaborations with professors and leaders in both the fields of neuroscience and neuroethics, to secure her first book offer at 24 and to launch several side-projects, the most prominent being a science podcast "Neuroethics Police" where she raises awareness on the ethical and societal implications of neuroscience. Katherine's trajectory has not been a straight path, growing up in a Middle-Eastern culture she has faced social pressure but also struggles, rejections and several moments of insecurities that she believes she can help other recognise, learn from and move past. Her talk will consist of the story of her own journey which includes career transitions, building the skills of creating her own opportunities, and how the latter helped her grow her confidence. She hopes that by sharing her personal experience with the audience, that you will be inspired and motivated to apply lessons she's learnt to your own challenges. Get your ticket at:
